The West Ottawa Warriors recorded their first League1 goal in a 2-1 loss to the Vaughan Azzurri Sunday night at Beckwith Park.
Josie De Jesus-Shaw scored the goal for West Ottawa in the 64th minute of the season opener, tying the game 1-1.
The Warriors held their own against the defending L1 Cup champions despite a number of missing players. The Azzurri had a number of chances from within the 18-yard box during the first half, but Ottawa was able to keep the score tied at zero at halftime.
Vaughan took the first lead of the game four minutes into the second half. De Jesus-Shaw tied the score 15 minutes later. Each team continued to have periods of pressure throughout the second half before Vaughan scored the late winner in the 88th minute.
“We were happy with the way we started the season,” said WOSC head coach Kristina Kiss. “We’re a very new team who is still trying to get to know each other. There are a lot of positives for us to build off of looking forward.”
West Ottawa will be back in action and looking for their first win of the season when they take on Durham United FA at Beckwith Park on May 13. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
